What does the Hash Generator tool do?
A hash function turns data of any length into a fixed-length fingerprint: the same input always gives the same output, and you can't go back from the output to the input. This tool calculates SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 with the browser's Web Crypto API.
What is it for?
- Comparing the checksum of a downloaded file or release
- Seeing intermediate values while testing hash/signature logic for payment notifications
- Quickly checking whether a piece of text has changed
Things to keep in mind
- Plain SHA-256 is not enough for storing passwords; use slow, salted algorithms such as bcrypt or Argon2.
- SHA-1 is no longer considered collision-resistant; prefer SHA-256 in new systems.
