What does the Regex Tester tool do?
Regular expressions (regex) are a pattern language for searching, validating or replacing text. This tool runs your expression on sample text and shows the matches and captured groups. It uses JavaScript regex syntax.
What is it for?
- Testing a validation pattern for emails, phone numbers or postcodes
- Trying an expression that extracts specific lines from a log file
- Seeing what an expression captures before a bulk find-and-replace
Things to keep in mind
- Complex expressions with nested repetition can become extremely slow on large input (ReDoS); keep patterns applied to user input simple.
